First Visit

You are more than welcome to accompany your child into the treatment area during the initial visit and during every exam!  This will give you the opportunity to see our amazing staff in action, and allow our dentist to discuss dental findings and treatment directly with you.  Our staff will review the health history form with you at the first visit.  The dentist and hygienist will evaluate the health of your child’s teeth and gums, check for cavities, and may assess your child’s bite for orthodontics (dependent on his or her age).  Additional services will be scheduled for a later visit.  Dental radiographs (x-rays) are taken only when the dentist feels they are necessary. Most children will have their first set of cavity-detecting x-rays around age 5, when the spacing between their back molars has closed.

Also, if more involved treatment is necessary after the first visit, it is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary anxiety, such as: "needle", "shot", “poke”, "pull", "drill" or "hurt". Our staff makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child. Our purpose is to gain your child's confidence and overcome apprehension.

We invite you to stay with your child during most every treatment. We allow one adult in our treatment room for more involved procedures. For the safety and privacy of all of our patients, please ask the dentist if your other children who are not being treated should remain in the reception room.

***PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR FORMS TO YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT!  Expect to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time, as we will need the extra time to scan your information into our system. ** Before the first visit, we suggest that you sit down and have a talk with your child as to what they might expect.  We have several ideas, tips, books and pointers that you might like to include in your discussion.  Please feel free to contact our office for this information.
